The tomosynthesis: a new radiologic diagnostic technique

Digital tomosynthesis represents a new radiological technique developed especially in the field of breast imaging as a valuable addition to breast cancer screening. It demonstrated a higher accuracy as compared with the bi-dimensional imaging commonly used and provides a three-dimensional format of the reconstructed images with the possibility of reducing the effect of tissue superimposition typical of the conventional planar digital mammography.

Recently, this kind of new radiological diagnostic technique has been also applied for body imaging.

The images provided by tomosynthesis can be useful for the possibility of a computed aided diagnosis starting from the dicom data obtained with this particular imaging tool.

All the diagnostic potential and clinical applications of digital tomosynthesis will be presented and discussed also in the field of its important implications for bioimaging.
